Instrument Donation and Refurbishment Program

PBS receives several donated instruments from Salvation Army and individuals.

The School District of Palm Beach County helps the Symphony find schools that need them and nominate deserving students.

PBS recently donated:

  • a baby grand piano to Glade View Elementary School in Belle Glade
  • a piano to Binks Forest Elemntary School in Wellington
  • a baby grand piano to Santaluces Community High School in Lantana
  • a piano to Palm Beach Lake Community High School in West Palm Beach
  • a piano to Boynton Beach Community High School in Boynton Beach
  • a piano to Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach
  • a cello and violin to students from Palm Springs Middle School in West Palm Beach
  • 3 small violins to UB Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School’s music program in West Palm Beach
  • a clarinet and a flute to students from UB Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School in West Palm Beach
  • a clarinet to a student from Santaluces Community High School in Lantana

An acoustic guitar, 6 ukuleles, 4 clarinets and 2 violins are currently available.

PBS mounted a campaign on the Power2Give crowdfunding website to raise $5,000 for the repair and refurbishment of the instruments. The campaign ended September 30th.

Young Friends of the Palm Beach Symphony raised $2,000 for the repair and refurbishment of instruments. The check was presented at the Ladie’s Guild Holly Jolly Symphony Fete in December, 2016.

Collaborating with the Science Museum, PBS participates in the STEAM Nights and provides musical activities such as Science Behind Strings, demonstrating how string instruments produce sound and what causes them to vary in pitch and volume; Music with Water, showing how different water levels affect the sound produced from glass jars.

Children’s Concert Series

  • In 2016/17 Season, PBS performed one of the most internationally recognized pieces that introduces children to music, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with narration by President of the Symphony’s Board of Directors Dale McNulty and dance choreography by Ballet Palm Beach.
  • All four one-hour “Peter and the Wolf” presentations of the 2016/17 Season were sold out! We hosted a total of 4,200 children from the school system.

Masterclass, Coaching and Side-By-Side Concerts

  • PBS percussionists, Gary Mayone & Mark Schubert, hosted a masterclass for 12 students at Palm Beach Day Academy to prepare for the performance of “Men at Work – A Tribute to Bob Vila”, composed by Chris Brooks. This piece implements everyday tools like rakes to “play” music in a unique tribute.

PBS creates a performance opportunity for:

  • Jupiter High School String Quintet at the Notables 2016/17 Season Preview at Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa on October 13 at 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
  • Jupiter High and Jupiter Middle School student ensembles at the Sugar Plum Dreams Holiday Brunch benefiting Quantum House at the Gardens Mall on November 13, at 10:00 PM-12:00 PM
  • Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts viola student and Palm Beach Day Academy Handbell Choir at the Worth Avenue Association’s “Music to Menus” on November 17, on Worth Avenue at 4:00 PM-9:00 PM.
  • The King’s Academy Conservatory Honors Choir and Jupiter High School String Quintet plan to perform in front of more than 100 PBS ambassadors, supporters, and business professionals at the PBS Ladies Guild Inaugural Luncheon, Holly Jolly Symphony Fête at The Beach Club, on Thursday, December 15, at 11:00 AM-13:30 PM.

Education Grants 

PNC Arts Alive awarded $10,000 to support children’s education programs, including annual school concerts, master classes and coaching in schools and instrument donations to students.

Education and Teacher Resources

In 2016, PBS was honored to be invited to become a presenter of “Link Up” music education program by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute.

  • “Link Up” is a highly participatory national and international music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute for students.
  • PBS will bring the internationally recognized music curriculum “Link Up” to the Palm Beach County School District to fill the void of music education for students in grades 3 through 5, and to reach over 1,000 students (between ten and fifteen schools) who are currently deprived of a high-quality music education curriculum.
  • PBS initiates the projects in cooperation with the Palm Beach County School District to recruit teachers and schools to participate in the program.
  • PBS seeks grants to start the program.
