About Palm Beach Symphony

Palm Beach Symphony is South Florida’s premier orchestra known for its diverse repertoire and commitment to community. Founded in1974, this 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization adheres to a mission of engaging, educating, and entertaining the greater community of the Palm Beaches through live performances of inspiring orchestral music under the direction of its Music Director Gerard Schwarz. The orchestra is celebrated for delivering spirited performances by first-rate musicians and distinguished guest artists. Gerard Schwarz, Music Director

Internationally recognized for his moving performances, innovative programming and extensive catalogue of recordings, American conductor Gerard Schwarz serves as Music Director of the All-Star Orchestra, Eastern Music Festival, Palm Beach Symphony and Mozart Orchestra of New York, and is Conductor Laureate of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Emeritus of the Mostly Mozart Festival. He is Distinguished Professor of Music; Conducting and Orchestral Studies of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and Music Director of the Frost Symphony Orchestra.

His considerable discography of over 350 albums showcases his collaborations with some of the world’s greatest orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Tokyo Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, New York Chamber Symphony and Seattle Symphony Orchestra among others. In 2017 The Gerard Schwarz Collection, a 30-CD box set of previously unreleased or limited release works spanning his entire recording career was released by Naxos.

Schwarz began his professional career as co-principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic and has held Music Director positions with the Mostly Mozart Festival, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and New York Chamber Symphony. As a guest conductor, he has worked with many of the world’s finest orchestras and has led the San Francisco, Washington National and Seattle Opera companies on many occasions. He is also a gifted composer and arranger with an extensive catalogue of works that have been premiered by ensembles across the United States, Europe and Korea.

Schwarz is a renowned interpreter of 19th century German, Austrian and Russian repertoire in addition to his noted work with contemporary American composers. He completed his final season as Music Director of the Seattle Symphony in 2011 after an acclaimed 26 years - a period of dramatic artistic growth for the ensemble.

In his nearly five decades as a respected classical musician and conductor, Schwarz has received hundreds of honors and accolades including Emmy Awards, GRAMMY nominations, ASCAP Awards and the Ditson Conductor’s Award. He was the first American named Conductor of the Year by Musical America and has received numerous honorary doctorates. The City of Seattle named the street alongside the Benaroya Hall “Gerard Schwarz Place” in his honor. His book, Behind the Baton, was released by Amadeus Press in March 2017. ​He has been married to his wife Jody for 37 years, has four children and lives in Florida.

Carlos Fernando Lopez

With a career punctuated by Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, Carlos Fernando Lopez stands as a bridge between classical and popular music, effortlessly melding these worlds into breathtaking compositions and productions. Carlos's achievements are a testament to his unparalleled talent and unwavering dedication.

He has etched his name in music history with accolades like the Latin Grammy Award for Best Christian Album in 2022, his composition "Sacre" earning Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2020, and securing the prestigious Record of the Year at the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards. This incredible journey also includes a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album in 2016, shared with the legendary Ricky Martin.

Carlos's musical odyssey commenced under the influence of his opera-singing grandfather, and he embarked on formal training at a remarkably young age. His prodigious talent led him to the Young Performers Competition of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia at just 14, where he showcased his piano virtuosity as a soloist.

His dedication to education is as profound as his musical prowess. Carlos holds a Doctorate in Orchestra Conducting, a Magna Cum Laude degree in Music Production, and a Master's degree in Composition from the esteemed University of Miami - Frost School of Music. His academic accomplishments mirror his commitment to musical excellence.

Carlos's influence extends beyond his awards and degrees. He has collaborated with an array of renowned artists, shaping the soundscapes of Ricky Martin, Laura Pausini, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and many others. His orchestrating and conducting talents even found their way into the realm of virtual reality with the NASA-backed project "Mars 2030," collaborating with the London Symphony Orchestra.

His dedication to music education is equally remarkable. Carlos's teaching journey began at just 18, and his roles at the Superior Academy of Arts of Bogotá helped transform it into the School of Arts at District University. He also played a pivotal role in the National Plan of Music for Coexistence in Colombia, demonstrating his commitment to music's power to transform lives.

Carlos Lopez's journey embodies the transformative power of music and education, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music while inspiring future generations, with the London Symphony Orchestra being a notable part of his collaborative legacy.
